[Her brows arch as she leans forward to peer down at the brace, her ears flicking forward as her tail began to wag. The joint moved smoothly as she slid her feet under her and stood up carefully. Giving her knee a few experimental flexes, Mika's face lit up with a smile as she huffed, her skirts still held tightly in her hands so they didn't catch on the hinges.]

That's miles better than before!

Glad to hear it. [ Rex gathers up his tools and stands up. ] Your friend Jezebel does good work, by the way.

Yeah, she really does...

[Her smile is bashful again as she lets go of her skirts, smoothing them out. They've been bustled in the front to keep them from catching in any machinery, though they still covered her knees. Mika fusses with the buckles on her own tool belt before she can actually meet his eyes again.]

Just don't let her near your horse without you watching her, Mister Marksley. She's been itching to see how it works.

[ Another laugh ] So long as she doesn't up an' take him apart, she's welcome ta look.

Th-that's why I said don't let her near him...

[She looks a little distressed, twisting the fabric of her skirts. It was pretty clear from the look on Mika's face that taking him apart was exactly how Jezebel wanted to see how he worked.]

All right, all right. I'll be takin' him home soon anyway.

[ "Home" in this case being the little house on the edge of town he'd been given after saving them from something or other. A home away from home, if you will, because his real home will always be the family farm. ]

Care ta give that brace a try and walk with me?

A-ah, I suppose that wouldn't be objectionable.

[She fidgets a little and almost stumbles for reasons that had nothing to do with her leg brace. Mika catches herself quickly, tail bristling before she makes it safely down the steps and onto the dirt road.]

I should probably check the wards out that way as it is.

Just let me buy a coupla things and we can be on our way.

[ He pops into the general store, and after a moment of haggling with the store owner (yes, he's paying for his items. He wants to pay for them. Stop trying to give him stuff), he joins her out on the street. ]

Shall we?

[He can't hear her chuckling as she catches wisps and snatches of the conversation, and the only thing left of her amusement is the ghostly dimples of her smile by the time he returns. Mika has gathered her supplies and her satchel is slung over her shoulder and already buckled into place.]

Of course! After you, Mister Marksley.

[ He un-tethers his horse, taking the reins in one hand. His free arm, he offers to her. ]

[Ducking her head, her smile wobbles a little out of nervousness before she takes his arm, her hands resting lightly at his elbow.]

[ poor thing. People are probably already talking about Mika walking arm in arm with Rex Marksley ]

Would it be imposin' if I asked to check the wards with you? I've always found 'em interesting.

[Mika will likely spend the next week holed up in Jezebel's workshop to avoid the gossip. Her ears twitch toward him as she looks up at his face for the briefest moment, honestly surprised.]

No, it'd be fine. I wouldn't mind at all.

So, tell me about yourself. Have ya always lived in Rift?

[Tail wagging, she thinks it over for a moment.]

Feels like I have at this point, I came here when I was a cub with my family.

It's a nice place. Fulla nice people, too.

Yeah...

[She ducks her head a little, the tip of her tail flicking. Rift was rather nice, when the wards stayed up and everyone was safe. People here were nice but it was a little scary when the monsters came through town.]

Plenty dangerous, too. [ Yeah, he followed her train of thought easily enough. ] It's admirable work ya do, helpin' with the wards.

Someone's got to, right?

[She clutched a small brooch pinned to her blouse's collar, the other hand hovering near her toolbelt.]

Jezebel can't keep all of them working just by herself, it's a lot of work, even for her.

It's not a job everyone would take, though. It takes heart. And courage.

[ he gives her another smile at that ]

We're almost there. I just need a minute to drop off my horse and my things.

N-not really, I don't think...

[It was easier to talk to him when she ducked her head and hid behind her hair when he smiled at her, it kept her from stuttering too much.]

That's fine, I'm not really in a rush Mister Marksley.

Well, I think so. [ A chuckle. Her shyness is darling.

It's not long before they come across his little house. There's a building out back that's a sort of stable/workshop. That's where he guides his horse, after disabling the special mechanical lock he has on the place.

He motions her inside. ]

Sorry about the mess. Inventin' ain't exactly an... organized hobby. [ and it's true, there are bits and pieces and schematics all over the place. ]

At least I don't have to worry about traps, sir.

[And it was true, the mess was something she could handle, brace or no brace. Years of working with Jezebel had given Mika a rather well-adapted skill of picking her way around parts and blueprints without even catching her skirts. Most of the time, at least.

Rex's workshop was much safer than Jezebel's safehouse, as her workspace was built with the express purpose of being something of a small fortress. Mika simply found a safe place to stand and wait, peering with polite interest at some of the more fascinating pieces scattered about. She couldn't make any sense of them but they were certainly interesting to look at.]

No need ta be so formal.

[ He moves his horse into the stable part, and begins the process of shutting it down for the time being. Once the horse is in... stasis, for want of a better term, he reemerges to the workshop.

He plucks a little device from his worktable and offers it to her. It's a little flower, made of plain steel. It has little gears that make the petals open and close. ] You can call me Rex.

Yes, Mister Marksley.

[She was looking at something with several dials and lenses while he got his horse settled, her hands clasped loosely as she leaned over a workbench. Looking up when she heard him returning, the flower takes her completely by surprise.

Mika catches herself reaching out to touch it with a claw before she even realizes it. It was stunning, though she pulls her hand back hesitantly as if worried she might break it if she does touch it without permission. Rubbing the back of her hand, Mika nods, her ears flicking back.]

Y-yes Mister Marksley--ah, I-I mean, Rex. Thank you.
