[ This is an apartment. It's a fairly small apartment- even for someone on Jacob's salary, but it suits him. Every thing is practical and neat- if a little dark. Dear Jake has a fondness for dark wood when it comes to furniture- and perfect.

Except for the part where there's a 200-pound wolf sprawled on the bed like he owns it. The fedora is hanging from one of the bedposts, for want of a proper hat rack.

Jacob himself is in the shower, pondering how the hell his life got so complicated all of a sudden. ]

[There's a beat. And then fire crawls across her entire body, appearing to burn away her clothes, her skin, everything. The couch, fortunately, is unaffected.]

[ He takes a step back, hands up. Fedora just covers his eyes with a paw, as if to say Oh no, not again ]

[And the fire sort of... rolls away. She's back to normal. Albeit smoking.]

I am, all right? I am. I'm sorry for this whole mess. I'm sorry the chief stuck us together, I'm sorry I'm involved in you whole- [ vague hand motions ] -your whole world. I'm sorry I ever found that hat, let alone put it on.

I'm a cop, Kara, a good one, and that's all I ever wanted. I was never made for any of this.

[She just stares at him for a long moment. And then her expression softens slightly.]

Everything happens for a reason. Just keep telling yourself that. Otherwise you're going to go mad.

[ he's just going to... find a chair and plop down, giving her a slightly apologetic smile ] Perhaps you should have given me a script to work off of.

[And she sprawls across the couch again, studiously studying the Giant Puppy.]

... So now what?

[ He watches Fedora as well- who looks from one to the other, then yawns, tail thumping happily against the floor. ]

[Wiggles her fingers at the Puppy--here boy!]

[ Fedora streeeeeetches and pads over- yay pettings! ]

Oh, yes. Brilliant. I'll just park him in front of Sesame Street so he can get to work on his alphabet.
