[ Oh, he just laughs. ] Did you just dip me? Oh, I love it.

[Well that noise is a delight. It gets a smile in turn.]

I have a romantic streak.

[He says that playfully.]

[ That smile is a delight. It’s nice to see a real one. ]

Is that so? [ His eyes narrow slightly, and he’d almost look suspicious if not for the way he’s grinning. ] Are you trying to sweep me off my feet?

[Mildly,]

Depends. Am I succeeding?

[Hedge your bets, as the soldiers say. He's been too long at war.]

I think you might be.

[ It occurs to Charlie that it’s going to suck when Alke goes back to… wherever he came from, but when you live as long as he does, you learn to take whatever fleeting moments you can get. Hours, days, or years, you take them and you enjoy them for what they are, and you don’t try to think about what’s going to happen when it’s over. ]

[causalities]

[He was never someone who found solace in someone's arms in every city they were stationed in. No time, little interest. Sleeping was more important by far. Furlough was different, once in a while you met someone you had a connection with. He never really expected to see any of them again.

Earth's a long ways away, but it's not a deal-breaker, either. The song ends, and in the lull that follows, he leans down and kisses Charlie's cheek very gently.]

What do you know about this constellation?

[He gestures at Cassiopeia, roughly where he's worked out his home to be.]

[ Oh. That was… that was really sweet, and Charlie feels his cheeks go red. Suddenly he feels like a kid with a crush, and it’s sort of thrilling. ]

That one? [ He traces out the five brightest stars in the constellation with a finger. ] That’s Cassiopeia, and that’s really the extent of my knowledge. Why?

Mm.

[It's a little, considering noise.]

Do you believe in life on other worlds?

[animated]

[ The cynical eighty-year-old part of Charlie abruptly wonders if this is where the other shoe drops and he finds out this guy is some kind of whacko. ]

… Why?

[causalities]

[-- That's a suspicious reaction. He actually blinks in slow bemusement, and arches an eyebrow.]

Curiosity?

[animated]

Ah, sorry. That just kind of came out of nowhere. It caught me off-guard.

[ Because honestly, Charlie would feel like an asshole if he took an innocuous little question and ruined this… whatever it was. Also? He is a wizard, so maybe he should keep a more open mind. ]

I guess anything’s possible.

[causalities]

[Definitely suspicious. He shakes his head a little.]

I've always thought there must be. Big universe.

[animated]

[ Okay, okay. Serious answer time now. ]

I haven’t really given it much thought, if we’re being honest.

[ He shrugs. ] It is a big universe. It’d be awfully lonely if we were the only ones in it.

[causalities]

It would be.

[He says that in quiet agreement, and draws a breath. Growing up, it was normal to accept the fact that there were other worlds out there. It's easy to forget sometimes, that the Chains went up only three decades ago.]

Would you like to go back?

[animated]

[ That seems like a rather abrupt subject change, and Charlie glances up, frowning. Did he blow it? He probably blew it. ]

Is something wrong?

[causalities]

Mm? No.

[It really isn't, he's too laid-back to really be bothered by anything short of physical violence or obvious insult.]

It occurs to me I didn't ask if you work tomorrow.

[animated]

[ That does very little to reassure Charlie "can't keep a relationship" Maxwell. ]

I get to set my own hours, so we can stay out here for as long or as little as you like.

[causalities]

[charlie pls.]

Then I see no harm in remaining.

[He rubs a thumb against his opposing palm as if he's trying to work out some sort of stiffness.]

I don't suppose there are any American dating conventions I should be aware of?

[He's back to playful, as he says that.]

[ IT’S HARD TO BE HIM, OKAY

It’s something of a relief to hear Alke wants to stick around. He snatches up his phone and stows it back in his pocket before moving to sit back down. ]

You seem to be doing just fine so far. I’m of the mind that whatever does or doesn’t happen on a date should be left up to the people actually on the date.

[causalities]

[He sits as well, fingers laced, arms resting on his thighs.]

I suppose that's fair. Not so dissimilar from home.

[ Charlie hums a little, gaze turned upward. His eyes land on the bright “W” shape in the middle of Cassiopeia again. ]

Do I ever get to learn where that is? “Home”, I mean.

[causalities]

[He sets his jaw. It costs him nothing to say it. Whether he is believed or not-- well, that isn't up to him. He does not like to lie. He fidgets briefly, twists his fingers together.]

Sal Amast. Specifically, the province Vehlo. You would not find it on a map of Earth.

[ WELP.....

He glances over, one eyebrow oh-so-slowly arching ]

So what would I find it on a map of?

[He points to the belt of stars.]

I don't have exact coordinates. The planet is called Dunya.

[He keeps his tone level, calm. Nor does he attempt movement of any sort.]

[ He falls quiet for a moment. On the one hand, he kind of gets where Alke’s coming from, with the reserved posture and careful way he’s speaking. More than once, he’s considered telling someone about his magic. He imagines the conversation would probably go similarly.

On the other hand, the dude just straight up told him he’s from another planet. ]

That’s kind of a lot to just take in, you realize.
