Ah, sorry. That just kind of came out of nowhere. It caught me off-guard.

[ Because honestly, Charlie would feel like an asshole if he took an innocuous little question and ruined this… whatever it was. Also? He is a wizard, so maybe he should keep a more open mind. ]

I guess anything’s possible.

[Definitely suspicious. He shakes his head a little.]

I've always thought there must be. Big universe.

[ Okay, okay. Serious answer time now. ]

I haven’t really given it much thought, if we’re being honest.

[ He shrugs. ] It is a big universe. It’d be awfully lonely if we were the only ones in it.

It would be.

[He says that in quiet agreement, and draws a breath. Growing up, it was normal to accept the fact that there were other worlds out there. It's easy to forget sometimes, that the Chains went up only three decades ago.]

Would you like to go back?

[ That seems like a rather abrupt subject change, and Charlie glances up, frowning. Did he blow it? He probably blew it. ]

Is something wrong?

Mm? No.

[It really isn't, he's too laid-back to really be bothered by anything short of physical violence or obvious insult.]

It occurs to me I didn't ask if you work tomorrow.

[ That does very little to reassure Charlie "can't keep a relationship" Maxwell. ]

I get to set my own hours, so we can stay out here for as long or as little as you like.

[charlie pls.]

Then I see no harm in remaining.

[He rubs a thumb against his opposing palm as if he's trying to work out some sort of stiffness.]

I don't suppose there are any American dating conventions I should be aware of?

[He's back to playful, as he says that.]

[ IT’S HARD TO BE HIM, OKAY

It’s something of a relief to hear Alke wants to stick around. He snatches up his phone and stows it back in his pocket before moving to sit back down. ]

You seem to be doing just fine so far. I’m of the mind that whatever does or doesn’t happen on a date should be left up to the people actually on the date.

[He sits as well, fingers laced, arms resting on his thighs.]

I suppose that's fair. Not so dissimilar from home.

[ Charlie hums a little, gaze turned upward. His eyes land on the bright “W” shape in the middle of Cassiopeia again. ]

Do I ever get to learn where that is? “Home”, I mean.

[He sets his jaw. It costs him nothing to say it. Whether he is believed or not-- well, that isn't up to him. He does not like to lie. He fidgets briefly, twists his fingers together.]

Sal Amast. Specifically, the province Vehlo. You would not find it on a map of Earth.

[ WELP.....

He glances over, one eyebrow oh-so-slowly arching ]

So what would I find it on a map of?

[He points to the belt of stars.]

I don't have exact coordinates. The planet is called Dunya.

[He keeps his tone level, calm. Nor does he attempt movement of any sort.]

[ He falls quiet for a moment. On the one hand, he kind of gets where Alke’s coming from, with the reserved posture and careful way he’s speaking. More than once, he’s considered telling someone about his magic. He imagines the conversation would probably go similarly.

On the other hand, the dude just straight up told him he’s from another planet. ]

That’s kind of a lot to just take in, you realize.

I know. I'm sorry, it isn't my intent to overwhelm you. I just don't like to lie.

[He has little in the way of proof, at least in a physical sense. It's only a matter of his word. Skepticism is natural.]

[ From what little he knows of the man, it does seem out of character for Alke to spin such an outrageous lie. ]

Okay. Let’s say you’re from another planet. How’d you even get here?

I don't pretend to know the science. Someone I served with, her father-- [How does one even explain the Chains?] -- can forge and maintain... portals, I suppose, between worlds. My sister fled here to escape persecution from our family, and her husband's militia. I followed.

[A helpless little shrug.]

So you hopped through a Stargate, basically.

[ Charlie, don’t make references at the poor guy.

More seriously, he says, ] I mean, that doesn’t sound totally impossible.

[Individually, the words are sort of appropriate, so he gets enough of the context to nod.]

Something like that, though I have little in the way of proof.

You don’t really strike me as the type to just… make something like that up. [ It’s not an admission of total belief, but it’s some kind of acceptance. ]

I’ve got a portal to Las Vegas in my living room, so a portal to another planet isn’t all that strange, I guess.

[His turn to quirk an eyebrow.]

I wasn't aware humans had that sort of technology.

We don't. It's magic.

[Everything that happens on his world, as far as he knows, is the due course of technology. But then, Nehir Akambe is a telekinetic, and Alke has seen impossible things.

He tips his head to one side, studying Charlie intently a moment. Then he nods.]

Not a common thing on Earth, then?

[ He watches Alke a second, gauging his reaction. The conclusion he comes to is either Alke is genuinely a spaceman, or he’s a really, really good actor. ]

Not really. Most people don’t even know it exists.
