It’s lucky that they weren’t off-put by your presence, and that you became friends besides. It’s a rarity.

[ There’s a part of Matthias that would really like to meet them, just out of curiosity, but he’s not sure how they’d take to a wizard. He decides not to bring it up for now. ]

Ah, well. It’s not often I am given the opportunity to speak about myself. To start of the beginning, I’ve always been able to see the spirits of the dead. Some of them have been my closest friends, in fact, though that didn’t strike me as odd until I was older.

Needless to say, my parents found it rather disconcerting.

[departea]

Did they believe you about it? Or did they think you were just making them up and talking to thin air?

[ it's already awful to have your parents not approve of your interests when they're normal, non-supernatural ones. this must have been worse. ]

[necrologic]

They knew. My father also possessed some spiritual sensitivity, though not much. At the very least he knew that the spirits were real.

I think it was the way I considered them friends that never sat right with him. There aren’t many of us Spiritualists, and the rest of the wizarding community is quick to write us off as weirdos.

[departea]

Ugh. People are always so prejudiced when it comes to the dead. I have no clue how other wizards work, but I'm a hundred percent certain you have the coolest magic powers.

[ if other wizards can't talk to dead people then, like, that's already points off the useful meter. ] Wait, so powers get passed along the family?

[ like in harry potter. ]

I think you might be a bit biased, my friend. [ Still, he's grinning. It's not often he hears that he's got "the coolest magic powers" ]

Magic is passed down from father to son, though what one does with their magic is their choice.

[departea]

So, what could you be doing with yours besides the whole [ a vague hand gesture ] helping out us dead folk?

[necrologic]

Officially, there are nine schools of magic; Animators, Defenders, Destroyers, Elementalists, Enhancers, Illusionists, Menders, Nurturers, and Spiritualists. I’m sure you can guess what they do based on the names.

On the fringes, we also have Necromancers, and Jacks. The latter pick and choose from different schools and do not specialize in any one thing.

[departea]

Wow. So there's a lot of you out there then, huh? You learn new things every day.

[ she tries to look unbothered by the mention of necromancers. that... definitely is not something she'd want to deal with any time soon. or any time at all, actually. ]

[necrologic]

Our communities are fairly insulated, especially for those of high standing, but they are somewhat large, yes.

[ He watches her for a moment, gauging her reaction. ] Did I upset you?

[departea]

Well... not really you. It's more like...

[ give her a moment, she needs to think this through. ] it's a bit disappointing when you hear about people like... us doing bad things to each other. The necromancers, I mean. I know we all have our differences, but sometimes I just wish we'd stick together instead of using our abilities against each other.

[necrologic]

It’s a sentiment I very much share. [ And it was also a lesson hard-learned. ] There is something of a debate between Necromancers and Spiritualists about whether a person ceases to be a person once their body has died. They would believe that is true, and so they don’t necessarily act out of malice, though I suppose some of them might. Ignorance can be just as harmful as hate.

Unfortunately, as I said before, there are very few wizards who posses enough spiritual sensitivity to even see spirits. Necromancers are allowed to continue as they are because people care very little about the things they cannot see.

[ His mouth presses into a thin line for a moment. ] If you’d like, I can give you some wards against Necromancy, as a precaution.

[departea]

Oh! That would be lovely, thank you.

Does it ever get frustrating? Specializing in something that others of your kind don't really appreciate or understand? [ like being an art major. ]

[necrologic]

Let us find somewhere out of the way, then.

[ There's a part of the cemetery that's pretty sheltered by trees, and that's where he heads ]

You get used to it. I suppose we are also few in number because those of us who are truly dedicated don't particularly care about the approval or understanding of our peers.

[departea]

[ she immediately follows after him. ]

That's a rare trait. Most people would do pretty mad things when others don't like them, you know.

[necrologic]

When you've been around for nearly two centuries, I suppose some things cease to matter so much.

[departea]

[ she trips over a headstone. ]

You've been alive for nearly how long?

[necrologic]

[ He actually doesn't answer her at first because he's trying to figure out how someone without a physical body managed to trip on something. ]

Ah. Two hundred years.

We wizards are naturally long-lived.

[departea]

[ she is completely oblivious to his shock. ]

How long-lived? What's the average lifespan?

[necrologic]

I have another five decades or so in me, I believe.

[ He indicates the gravestone with a motion of his hand. ] Did you legitimately run into that?

[departea]

Oh.

[ she just kind of. shrugs. ] Um, yes. It's a thing I do? It's kind of a complicated process. I actually haven't really spoken to other ghosts about it, so I'm not really sure how common it is? If it even is?

[necrologic]

In my own experience, I've yet to meet a spirit who can interact with objects without intense amounts of concentration or outside help.

So, I would dare to wager that it is not all that common.

[departea]

You can touch me, if you want.

[ if he does, she'd feel... not quite solid? like kind of weird and squishy, but he'd definitely actually touch her. ]

[necrologic]

[ so basically she's made out of jello

Matthias' eyebrows go up, and he looks at her as if to ask "are you sure?" But, well, she did give him permission.

He reaches out and gently pokes her in the shoulder ]

... How fascinating.

[departea]

There was a point where I got almost completely solid! And-- get this-- normal people saw me. Oh my god, it was amazing! Getting to just walk around and wave at strangers and then get yelled at by strangers. Wild!

[ she frowns. ] I don't think I'll be able to do that again. It doesn't seem to work anymore.

[necrologic]

Might I ask how that happened? Or do you not know?

Such a thing is possible, but not without assistance. I could help you along, for instance, but the spellwork involved is extremely complicated and time-consuming, and the effects are only temporary.
