Surely you cannot have one without the other. If we're cut off from the Fade, then we're as good a Tranquil.

Tranquil? What's that?

[hopesillusion]

Tranquil mages have been... cut off from the Fade. They do not dream, nor do they feel anything, really. They are content with their lot in life, and obey logic above all else.

Largely, the Rite of Tranquility is a last resort- but some have been known to ask for it.

But why would anyone do that? Doesn't that mean you're not yourself anymore?

[hopesillusion]

Because some of us.... can't, or won't, control their gifts.

[aerify]

[Man, she is almost not wrapping her head around this.]

So they keep you trapped, here? Does that really help anyone?

[She for one hates being trapped in one place for too long]

[hopesillusion]

There is good to be found in the Circle, I promise. It is just... harder here than elsewhere.

[aerify]

[She scoffs] Well they're definitely NOT keeping me here. I have people to help and some airbending to learn.

We've a long way yet to go in securing your freedom.

I may believe what you've said, but the Knight-Commander is another story entirely.

I don't know how long I can afford to stay here though. [Man, doesn't want to mention the trouble back in Republic City but]

And even if I do agree to stay for a little while... [She sighs]

It isn't going to happen tonight, I know that much. You say you have no ties to the Fade, but that's going to be difficult to prove.

What's the Fade like anyways?

[hopesillusion]

It is... difficult to describe. It is populated by spirits and demons, but the landscape is constantly changing, as the spirits shape it after images seen in the dreams of mortals.

Aside from dwarves, all mortals enter the Fade when they dream.

[aerify]

Dwarves? Oh, you mean the short people with the really big beards??

[WOW RUDE KORRA]

That aside I guess it sounds similar, but... yeah, can't say I've had real contact in a place like that. [Makes a gesture with her hand by raising her palm above her head and then lowering it]

This is me and this is how much spirit related things I've had contact with.

That's... one way to put it, yes. [ Maker, this girl has no tact. Here's hoping she doesn't get smart with Meredith. ]

You truly do not draw from the Fade when you bend?

[aerify]

Well, think about it! Nature and the elements are already all around us so I'm using what's already there.

[hopesillusion]

So is magic, Korra. Some of us are simply born with the ability to use it.

[ A sigh, and he massages his temples ] This is going to be a hard sell.

[aerify]

There's gotta be something else that makes bending and magic different.

[Oh wait... she overheard something in the street, from a dwarf in the market. Something about lyrium and magic and mages? And the Templars that confronted her were befuddled on why she wasn't running out of "mana" or something]

Actually... what do you know about lyrium? I heard it mentioned around me a few times.

Lyrium is a mineral. Mages and Templars alike both have their uses for it, but largely it can be used in enchanting, or to amplify one's abilities.

Not something you have where you're from, I'm guessing?

[aerify]

Nope! We don't use minerals or special rocks to make our bending better. That's what training is for!

[Biiiig grin]

Looks like we got something to work with on getting me out of here!

It's a thin defense at best, but we can work on it.

But it is getting late. Do you think you can manage to stay until tomorrow?

[aerify]

I think I can handle one night.

[But she isn't going to sit still of course]

Is there an open space around here where I can do some morning exercise? That should be okay right?

[hopesillusion]

Let me show you to your room, then.

[ He moves to stand, but pauses at her question ]

[Standing up as well Thanks Orsino. I really appreciate it.

And I want to exercise my bending. [A beat.] I mean, without actually throwing earth, fire, and water around. If people need to watch me, I'm fine with that.

[Thinking positive here! It's like being at the South Pole compound except more repressive and depressing!!]

I'd prefer not to cause a scene if I can help it.

[ A pause, as he considers this for a moment. ]

Come to my office first thing in the morning, and I will supervise you myself. [ THat should keep Meredith off their backs. Hopefully. ]
