Well, I can't really remember how. Honestly, it's beyond me because I remember it was snowing in the mountains and Naga just found me. I passed out while riding her.

I was in some trouble before that actually. Long story short, I was kidnapped, put into a metal box, and I barely escaped.

... I'm hard-pressed to figure out where you could have come from that it was snowing, even in the mountains. [ This isn't cold-ass Ferelden- and it's summer time to boot. ] You must be quite a long way from home.

It's unintentional, I swear.

Well, I was somewhere outside of Republic City. I doubt you've heard of that place too. [She asked around and of course no one knew 8(

She pauses before speaking up again]

Are they really going to make me stay here? I have important business to take care of back there and my friends and Tenzin will be worried about me. I won't cause anymore trouble, I just need to find a way back.

... If you truly are a mage, then I'm afraid you have little choice in the matter. Meredith very rarely tolerates apostates in her city. [ coughANDERScough- he and Merrill's ties to the Champion are the only things keeping Meredith from swooping in. Swooping is bad.

He's quiet for a beat, and when he does speak again, he's lowered his voice. ]

But, if what you say is true and you're not a mage, you are out of both of our jurisdictions. So perhaps you should explain this "bending" of yours.

Meredith looks and sounds like a person who would like to shut down someone for being able to spray mist. I don't think she likes me either way.

Okay, so how to explain bending, how to explain bending... well first off, it's controlling or manipulating the elements around you. For instance, I can't make water appear out of nowhere. There has to be a source of liquid for me to control. Firebending looks like magic, but it can come from internal heat and external flames. Earth... [She grins and taps her foot on the clearly earthen/stone ground making one of the Templars twitch nearby]

It's almost all around us with some exceptions. That's the gist of it. Oh, and almost forgot air. Well, that's just something available 24/7.

I doubt she does- you bested her Templars, after all- but I hope she wouldn't blame me for not trying to force a non-mage into the Circle.

[ A hollow hope, because letting Korra go is sure to earn him Meredith's wrath no matter what. He's still not totally convinced she's not a mage himself, but he's at least willing to hear her out. ]

How is it that one becomes a... bender? Is it a learned or inherited ability? Where do you draw your power from? The Fade, or something different?

She's that hard on you guys huh? [Somewhere in the back of her head, Korra wonders if this is what it would be like if the Equalists were to get their way if they couldn't take away bending. She only thinks about it briefly though.]

You have to be born with it and that's if you have family with bending somewhere in the lineage. And like I mentioned before, most people are born with the ability to control only one element. I'll just leave myself out of this because I'm different for certain reasons.

[She tries to think hard about how to explain where bending came from] Each bending culture learned how to bend from different sources of nature associated with each element. That... is also a long story. But it's physical as well as spiritual.

I could show you some of the martial arts associated with each element if you'd like; without all the jazz though just in case.

She is... very dedicated. [ That's code for "yes". It's been getting harder and harder lately for him and his people. ]

Actually, I think you should probably not leave yourself out. It's your freedom on the line, after all. If I'm to prove you are not a mage, I will need every piece of information I can get.

A demonstration can come later, but right now, try to explain everything to me as best you can.

[SIGH.] You're going to think I'm crazy and so is Meredith. But... here it goes.

[And thus she explains that she's the Avatar. What's the Avatar? The only person who can bend all four elements in the world. Korra explains how as the Avatar, it's her duty to keep the peace among benders and non-benders alike.

She explains how she has had past lives, previous Avatars before her who also made it their duty to save the world and end conflicts where they were needed.

And as for how she can't be a mage...]

You mentioned The Fade before right? I have no idea what it is. I think we have an equivalent, but we simply call it The Spirit World. And for the record, I'm good at the physical side of bending, but spiritually... I'm still improving on it.

[She barely managed to see the flashbacks Aang provided her after all.]

Surely you cannot have one without the other. If we're cut off from the Fade, then we're as good a Tranquil.

[aerify]

Tranquil? What's that?

[hopesillusion]

Tranquil mages have been... cut off from the Fade. They do not dream, nor do they feel anything, really. They are content with their lot in life, and obey logic above all else.

Largely, the Rite of Tranquility is a last resort- but some have been known to ask for it.

[aerify]

But why would anyone do that? Doesn't that mean you're not yourself anymore?

[hopesillusion]

Because some of us.... can't, or won't, control their gifts.

[aerify]

[Man, she is almost not wrapping her head around this.]

So they keep you trapped, here? Does that really help anyone?

[She for one hates being trapped in one place for too long]

There is good to be found in the Circle, I promise. It is just... harder here than elsewhere.

[aerify]

[She scoffs] Well they're definitely NOT keeping me here. I have people to help and some airbending to learn.

[hopesillusion]

We've a long way yet to go in securing your freedom.

I may believe what you've said, but the Knight-Commander is another story entirely.

[aerify]

I don't know how long I can afford to stay here though. [Man, doesn't want to mention the trouble back in Republic City but]

And even if I do agree to stay for a little while... [She sighs]

It'll be like running away.

It isn't going to happen tonight, I know that much. You say you have no ties to the Fade, but that's going to be difficult to prove.

[aerify]

What's the Fade like anyways?

[hopesillusion]

It is... difficult to describe. It is populated by spirits and demons, but the landscape is constantly changing, as the spirits shape it after images seen in the dreams of mortals.

Aside from dwarves, all mortals enter the Fade when they dream.

[aerify]

Dwarves? Oh, you mean the short people with the really big beards??

[WOW RUDE KORRA]

That aside I guess it sounds similar, but... yeah, can't say I've had real contact in a place like that. [Makes a gesture with her hand by raising her palm above her head and then lowering it]

This is me and this is how much spirit related things I've had contact with.

That's... one way to put it, yes. [ Maker, this girl has no tact. Here's hoping she doesn't get smart with Meredith. ]

You truly do not draw from the Fade when you bend?

Well, think about it! Nature and the elements are already all around us so I'm using what's already there.
