[ So in the spirit of getting into the police force one day, Makoto does what she always does when she's determined to get shit done-- take it one step further. It's not just studying like crazy (which is nothing new), it's waking up, getting up, and getting out there to see for herself the kind of things cops face.

... But of course, when it's Tokyo and Shibuya, she already knows most of the police are corrupt, so she tries a different tactic and that is what brings her to Iwatodai today, approaching this normal-looking young man with a black notebook in hand. ]

Excuse me. Might I have a moment?

[Makoto is so intense.

This entirely normal-looking young man has his headphones on, but the music isn't too loud...and well, he's Minato. When she approaches, he's pretty immediate in taking them off, blinking at her blankly.

...?]

Sure. [It's pretty unusual, he thinks, to be approached by someone who looks this no-nonsense, carrying a notebook like that--there must be something to it.] Can I help with something?

I'm sorry to bother you.

[ Makoto offers up a more rueful smile, reminding herself that she doesn't need to be all that business-like with someone around her age. Ann and Haru would have been much more approachable, even if they've called her the more diplomatic one. ]

I was actually wondering, would you be able to tell me what the crime rate is like here?

Er, I guess it's about the same as it would be in any city...? [Aside from the revenge website. What year is this even, we just don't know.]

Officer Kurosawa could probably tell you more, at the Police Station.

Then, if I may-- what are your opinions on the police force here?

[ Because Makoto isn't sure she wants to meet this Officer Kurosawa if he's just as corrupt as the police in Tokyo. ]

[It's a serious question, delivered by a very serious young lady--and because of that, Minato supposes he has to give it the seriousness it's due.

What does he think of the police force here...?

In Minato's experience, they're not very effectual. But that's not their fault. People dying during the Dark Hour--people dying from Shadows...that's not in their job description. How could they be expected to ever deal with something like that?

And Officer Kurosawa... even though he couldn't do anything, even though he hated leaving things to them as children, he did what he thought was necessary to save people.]

I believe that they do their best to protect the people who live here. They may not always be equipped to deal with the situation, but...they try the best they can to follow what they believe is just.

[In the end, Minato really is full of faith.]

[ ... That sounds a lot like how her father had been. Just and determined to do what he could to protect civilians, whether it was a thankless job or not. Hearing that the police here are just like that, at least according to this boy... it's an odd weight off her shoulders that she wasn't really aware of. ]

I see... so they truly believe in their duty.

I think so, yeah. They've never given me reason to think otherwise.

I'm interested in joining the police force in the future. But I wanted to see for myself how they're regarded in different series.

[He contemplates that for a moment, head tilting, before:]

That's some real dedication. But what about those places where their reputation is poor?

Then I'd like to learn more... and find a way to change it. The best way to do that is to find where I can make the most difference.
