What, you think I had some kind of wizarding teacher who took me aside and explained the mysteries of magic to me? My dad taught me a few things, but I got most of my spells from books and some old friends of his.

[Flatly, she says,] How would I know? I told you, my experience with magic is limited. As far as I'm concerned, you could have been taught by a grizzled old man in a pointed hat.

Let’s not resort to stereotypes here.

[ There’s a twinge of good humor there. He’s learning to appreciate her rare moments of sarcasm. ]

We’re not a secret society. We’re a… well, “community” is a bit strong, but we’re just people. We live and work and learn the same as anybody else.

And you keep secret because you're afraid of how others will react to you?

It's an issue of that's how the status quo has been for literally thousands of years, and I'm not high enough in the food chain to do anything about it.

[ He shrugs ] I'm breaking every rule in the book already just by telling you all this.

[A small noise resembling a "hmph" escapes her, which might be construed as consideration.]

Then I'm glad to have even a small part of your trust. But what I said earlier still stands, remember? I don't want to catch you gallivanting around the rooftops at night again. I can't condone anything that looks like you're up to no good.

[A noticeable pause.]

Trust? [ He quirks a brow. ] That’s an awfully strong word. I just figure that if your ladyship likes to gallivant around on rooftops and engage in the occasional act of espionage, you can keep a secret.

[ Her little afterthought draws a small laugh out of him. How lucky is he, to find an Empress who’s a vigilante at heart? ]

Don’t worry. You won’t catch me.

Well. That's why I said a small part. [Not that she expects it completely to begin with.]

Good. [A glance at the horizon.] I still have my questions, but we should get back to our daytime lives before the sun comes up.

I guess I’ll be on my way then. [ He sweeps into a bow, the motion too exaggerated to be anything but teasing. ] It’s been a pleasure, your empress-ness.

[ He doesn’t wait before taking her invitation to part ways and running with it- literally running, to the opposite side of the roof and bounding onto the next building over. After he’s got a bit of distance between them, he activates his camouflage and vanishes from sight, making the rest of the way home in near-invisibility. Mostly for his own sake of mind. ]
