You do this kind of thing often? Revolutionize stuff, I mean.

I once had a hand in the discovery of time magic.

It's application went about as swimmingly as one would expect it to. Needless to say, further research has since been abandoned.

[animated]

Time magic? Like, stopping time? Making it go faster? Time traveling? That kind of thing.

[cultivations]

Slowing it down, moving backwards and forwards-- [ he gestures, as if to say it's so very uninteresting. ]

All good and well when written down on paper, to be sure, but introduce man and all his follies and you have yourself an unmitigated mess. I don't recommend pursuing that research, by the way. The temptation to utilize it will eventually become too much.

Yeah I can't... I can't even imagine the sheer levels of havoc.

No worries, I'm fine with my lot as an Animator. I've got no desire to become Doctor Who.

[cultivations]

[ his head tilts to one side as he frowns. ]

... I'm not entirely sure who this doctor is.

[animated]

Huh? Oh, crap sorry. Doctor Who is a, um. Series of stories about a man who can travel through time.

[cultivations]

Ah. A common myth in this place, then?

[animated]

Oh yeah. It's a very popular subject in fiction. Not quite as popular as magic, but it's up there.

[cultivations]

[ he sighs softly. ]

Magical fiction. How odd to be relegated to the realm of fantasy and make-believe. How do you stand it?

[animated]

[ He gives a shrug ] It's all I've ever known. If we were in an actual wizarding community, there would be less of a need for secrecy, but out here there's not many of us.

[cultivations]

So there are communities, then? I assumed each man was his own island.

[animated]

Wizards tend to stay in the same circles as other wizards. I'm a bit of the exception to the rule.

[cultivations]

Ah, a social pariah after my own heart.

One must imagine you aren't much of a fan of your community, after your tirade regarding your fellows' selfishness.

[animated]

That's... that's putting it lightly. The wizarding community as a whole never did me any favors.

[cultivations]

Corruption? Stagnation? Rampant excess? An impossibly bullheaded inclination to stick with the status quo, simply because "that's how it's always been done"?

If any of that is familiar, then you'd feel entirely home in Tevinter.

[animated]

[ He just. Stares at him. ]

It's really fucking scary how similar that sounds.

[cultivations]

[ Dorian smiles in return, though his voice is still as sharp as before. ]

Perhaps magic breeds such malfeasance.

[animated]

I think the society has a lot to do with it, too, but that could just be going in circles since the magic helped shape the society and on and on and on.

... This is a lot deeper than my after-work conversations tend to get.

[cultivations]

[ he chuckles, inclining his head. ]

My apologies. If you'd like, we could discuss something more mundane. The weather, perhaps.

Or I could allow you to watch me strip as I determine whether the cast-offs of your-- ex-boyfriend's, did you say? Will suffice.

[animated]

Not complaining, just mentioning.

[ and he arches an eyebrow ] I did say ex-boyfriend, and as tempting as that offer is, I think I'll step out of the room if it's all the same to you.

[cultivations]

Ah, well. You'll miss quite the show, but that's entirely your choice.

[animated]

I'll try not to let it keep me up at night.

[ he gives a dismissive little wave as he steps out of the bedroom ] Let me know if it doesn't work.

[cultivations]

[ surprising exactly no one, it takes some time for the belts and buckles of the mage's outfit to be undone, though Dorian does it with practiced ease. The robes are folded away and exchanged for the shirt and jeans.

... It's rather plain, he thinks. Far plainer than anything he's worn before, but at the very least, it seems to fit; it'll have to do.

He's still plucking at the shirt when he opens the door, a thoughtful frown knitting his brows together. ]

Well, I assume this is more acceptable?

[animated]

[ Charlie's first thought? An oh-so-eloquent oh no he's hot. But he keeps his expression carefully neutral ]
