[ Takane can tolerate a lot of things. Stuffy people, rude people, long lines, society's expectations.
But there are other things she cannot, and one of those happens to involve any sort of threat to those she deems important. Which, in this case, happens to be a surprisingly mobile walrus-like beast attacking her fellow singers. Naturally, when it flees, she... follows it.
Because an eighteen-year-old girl getting into a fight with a giant walrus is something that won't attract any attention at all. Especially when she gains the upper hand by singing at it.
She is, however, not used to any of this, so perhaps some assistance might be in order. ]

for the time being, anyway.
because everything about his life is for a purpose: everything that happens, everyone he meets; they're all a means to one specific end. and gilbert's heart bleeds and burns in a never ending torture as he waits for the day that he may actually be considered to have repented enough to deserve the chance to have what he lost. his most precious person, the one he lived for, the one he still lives for. it's not if he will have him returned to him, it's just when. but waiting is hard, sometimes even unbearable. so, for gilbert, everything that is his life is a distraction to pass the days (pass the hours) that need to singe themselves away into nothing until the time comes.
usually chain hunting is straightforward. usually, the chain is typical and it follows the same patterns as its brothers and sisters. they all have a common instinct and necessity to ensure their survival.
sometimes, though, the characteristics that bloom in a chain that make it unique throw gilbert for a loop enough that things get complicated. or, at least, annoying because it usually ends up with gilbert locating and confronting the chain only to be dumbstruck by some ridiculous and unexpected action it does. and then of course, they sometimes decide to run instead of attack after shellshocking their opponent (how stupid they are, that's for sure).
so he's been searching for this chain for quite some time, wondering how something of its size and sound could disappear so easily, but it all eventually does come to light when he hears some off in the distance screams. he's too late, though; at least, too late in terms of the chain has fled but he's managed to get some basic idea of where to go from the would-be victims that were able to talk without hysteria hindering them. before he departed, however, one had stepped forward, stopping him and begging him to help someone—another one of them that had pursued the chain when it retreated. he'd reluctantly accepted the request, particularly when the girl received support for her wish, but even as he ran through the streets, he cursed himself every step of the way. the chances he would make it in time before she was injured or worse were slim.
which is why when he hears singing along with some unpleasant familiar sounds that he follows it. he could question why the hell he's hearing such an... unique... commotion but if he was confused before arriving, as he halts his run as he turns a corner and they come into view, he doesn't even know what he is considered to be now.
...is she... singing at it? better yet, is it actually affecting the chain? that's a first. that's... ]
. . .
[ so messed up he doesn't even want to know, really. she's pretty close to it and if it gets agitated enough it could flail and she could end up getting hit. which is why gilbert decides having to track the chain down again may just be worth the trouble to avoid having to bring a lifeless body back to a bunch of crying girls. he doesn't think he could handle that. yes, chasing the chain later is much more preferable which is why he pulls one of his guns from where he stands and takes aim, firing three precise shots that hit the wailing creature. if it didn't like the girl's singing, it likes the singing with a couple bullet wounds even less and the actual injuries are enough to startle it to reel back and try to feel despite being... obviously severely handicapped from that girl's voice.
which would normally be ridiculously convenient, but, well, he doesn't want to take chances nor does he want to take advantage so he lowers his gun when he's sure the bullets hit their target before running to the girl and reaching to grab at her arm before she can get any bright ideas like maybe chase after it again. ]
H—Hey!

Except the gunshots startle her into silence, and the monster is already moving away. Before she can start after it, the hold on her arm halts her-- and simultaneously makes her whip around, eyes narrowed as she gets a proper look at the man who clearly has no sense of propriety.
That doesn't mean she can't be polite, though, so even as she looks down at her captured arm, her tone is smooth. ]
Yes? Did you require me so forcibly?

the girl's voice drags him out of his momentary daze, blinking and giving her a more focused and direct look, trying his best to give her an equally unhappy narrow eyed expression as if doing so is going to make his scolding all the more effective or something like that. (—well, okay, it's not going to help that but it does help him notice she's really kinda cute, now that he gets a look at her, and she's polite and it's like looking at a potential relative of sharon's only without the—) no. no no no. shut up, gilbert. just shut up, he tells himself in his head, letting his words spill out in response to further that mental command right along. ]
What do you think you're doing, do you even know what that is!

[ soft, somewhat puzzled, because she doesn't know this man, but that frantic look on his face makes him seem younger than she'd originally suspected, and he still has quite the grip on her arm. ]
Or something similar... I must confess, I've yet to witness the behavior of a walrus, but that was peculiar for several reasons. [ what was a walrus doing there, why did it attack them, how could it move so fast, etc. ]
1/2
even if it's a chain, this is on par with calling a leviathan a fish. ]
It—it..! Walruses don't do things like that!
[ not that he knows what walruses do, either, but unlike this girl he is not so good at admitting to such things. ]

gilbert is definitely bristled but certainly trying to calm down because he's not sure how to actually follow up his statement. telling people about chains can be pretty time consuming and considering the wal—chain— is quite fast, they don't really have that much time to spare. gilbert's only seen it at the mercy of being aggravated by her song, he has no idea how it acts when it's being aggressive.
he gives a small sigh before he slowly starts to loosen his grip on her arm. first things first. ]
You're—
[ he pauses, his brow creasing slightly. oh. maybe he should have listened a little better to the girls on what her name had been. he'd just taken enough time to grab her appearance and a direction to go in and bolted. ]
—those girls that were attacked earlier. They're your friends, right? They're worried about you, you know. What the heck did you run after it for, anyway?
no subject
[ never mind that Takane had no idea what a Chain was, her protective instincts rule out all else. ]
no subject
but, she's also missing a really important point, that kind of reminds him of someone else he knows... knew—no, he still knows them and he will always still know them because he will get them back alive. ]
So you turning yourself into the target is a good alternative? It would have had no qualms attacking you. [ . . . ] ...After whatever the hell you were doing to it wore off, anyway.

[ a sigh-- she'd really rather not argue. ] And fortuitously, it lacked appreciation for music. A fact I can no longer seize advantage of, at the moment.
[ because a certain someone scared it off... ]
... .../scoots in here.. ....
...How did you even find out singing at it—
[ wait, why is he asking her that? it's not like he's planning on singing to it when he finds it. gilbert shakes his head, he gives a small tug to her arm now, aiming to sort of guide her along past him as he steps forward by her and let's her go. ]
—Nevermind, I can't—I mean I'm not going to—sing, anyway. You should probably get back to your friends so they can stop being so upset. [ and he...needs to go find this dumb thing, but at least there's some blood to follow now, which is exactly what he starts doing. ]

[ and that's all she says before she briskly falls into step alongside the man, because you know what, she is not going to leave this unfinished. ]
