But she's at least consciously trying to behave herself, so it really is just sprinkling this time. And cinnamon. A MERE SPRITZ OF CINNAMON. ]

Once the sugar and cinnamon are in place, he presses them into the dough with the rolling pin. Then he folds each side inward until they meet in the middle, brushes egg wash onto the surface, and closes the sheet. ]

We'll chill it in the refrigerator for thirty minutes. It'll solidify the dough.

How good are you with a knife?

Well, I'm better with a gun--!!

Buuut I could probably make a knife work.

[ This from the woman who'd just been handed a pair of pistols and somehow made it work. Then again, that was fighting demons... ]

[ As long as she knows which end is pointy, he doesn't care much. Now to wait . . . ]

But she nods, radiating excitement like someone who isn't a full-grown woman. Calm down, Maya. ]

[ He counts the minutes in his head, occasionally checking the clock to verify the passage of time. Once thirty minutes have passed, he reaches out to grasp the refrigerator handle, which resists his initial pull. ]

[ A harder yank. There's a disconcerting crackling. But the door swings open, and frost seems to permeate the air. ]

The refrigerator's broken. We'll need to thaw the dough.

[ BLITHELY UNKNOWING, but somehow still cheerful. ]

Ah, well. They say the best cookies are the ones you get through grueling trials.

[ Right . . . bad luck. But he gives a mirthful scoff at that. ]

I like that way of thinking. All right—we'll set this aside for now. What else can we work on while we wait?

Hmmmmmm... we could take a lunch break, maybe? Or-- we've got a recipe for no-bake cookies, right?

[ His better judgment says no, but he'll let her have a freebie for that go-getter attitude. ]

It's too early for a break. We can try one of those recipes. What do you have in mind?

Chocolate peanut butter no-bake cookies, of course! It's got a name that packs a punch!

[ Maya's attitude is always go-getter, Eizen. ALWAYS. ]

[ This is great until she slaps a bowl of sugar onto a single sheet of pastry again.

If you ask him, that sounds like a name without a punch . . . ]

All right. You lead this one.

Yeees! Okay, then can I have you grab the oats? They're... in one of these cabinets.

[scooptimistic]

Probably the one with all the cereal boxes in it.

... One of the ones on the left.

[ Maya does not bake enough. ]

Don't you know where everything is in your own kitchen?

[ She gets a very, very skeptical raise of his eyebrow before he tries every cabinet on the left. ]

I usually eat at work, so kitchen stuff doesn't really happen!

[ But they're still in one of the cabinets on the left. ]

[ There they are. With a mild grimace, Eizen brings them to the counter. ]

That doesn't mean that it's no longer your responsibility. After we make these, we're taking a break and reorganizing the cabinets.

No. If we put it off any longer, it'll only get worse. We're going to renovate until you know where everything is.

... All right, all right. I guess this gives me some time to steel myself.
