It gave folks a trail to follow, a place to look, and it was only a matter of time before more men with warrants came through town.
But then there was the matter of Emma, and that caused him the most torment of all. He couldn’t bear to leave her, but the life of an outlaw was no life at all. He couldn’t ask Emma to leave this place when she had fought so hard to keep it, but Lord, he can’t break her heart.
